Tuckman's Team-work Theory
Tuckman details working with a team of social individuals, on behalf of the U. H. navy. The team studied small group behaviour, via several viewpoints. In doing so , Tuckman analyzed 50 content articles on group development and noticed that there was two features common to these small teams: the sociable or group structure, as well as the task activity. From this he identified that groups advanced into teams via 4 common phases. Firstly an orientation, tests phase which frequently led to a period characterized by a degree of conflict. This then generally fixed itself, leading to a more socially cohesive period. Finally, teams settled to a functional phase, during which they focused on role-relatedness. To summarize these types of four levels, Tuckman coined the oft-quoted terms: " forming”, " storming”, " norming” and " performing”.
